Joe

Born near the site of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, to a family steeped in military tradition, it is not surprising that I developed an abiding interest in military history. At university I majored in history with a minor in Peace, War, and Defence. Thus, when I moved to England to get married, I jumped at the chance to work for Osprey. Apart from my regular duties in Production and Design, I also serve as Osprey's Gamer-in-Residence. Miniatures, board games, role-playing games, I love them all. My favourite tanks are the little plastic hover tanks that came in Fortress America , one of the greatest board games of all-time. Hopefully my enthusiasm will be apparent as I post news and reviews about the hobby side of military history – from models to medals. I also couldn't resist the opportunity to share some of the weird, interesting, and macabre stories from military history that I have come across, and I hope it will encourage others to do the same.

The World of Military Fandom

With the sad resignation of blogmaster Mike, it is a time of quiet reflection here at Osprey, a time to examine all the mistakes, errors of judgement, and general bad calls, that permeated the Mike regime. It is time for the blog to heal, to grow, and once again strive to be the centre of military fandom that both you and I know it can be. So let’s get started!

Save This American Civil War Standard!

Your chance to help save a little piece of military history. While working on a recent miniature project, I found myself searching for images of the battle flag of the 13th Regiment of South Carolina Volunteers from the American Civil War. Eventually, I found one rather grainy image, and I felt darn lucky. The truth is that many of these flags have been lost, and many more are slowly deteriorating in basements and back rooms of museums across the US.

Micro Modelling: A Russian Amphibious Jeep

I am a wannabe modeller. I have tried many times to buy one of those beautiful plastic kits and assemble it into a fearsome death machine, but it never seems to work. Instead, I end up with a misshapen plastic lump, coated in glue clots, and adorned with my fingerprints.

Force on Force – The Modern Kriegsspiel?

The makers of Ambush Alley return with a new game, that may take many wargamers by surprise! About two hundred years ago, the Prussian military used a strategic military simulator using a map and little wooden blocks called Kriegsspiel (literally, wargame). Since that time, wargaming has grown into a popular hobby, but the games themselves have tended to get simpler and simpler....

Re-watching Gettysburg

Gettysburg has long been one of my favourite war movies, but even I have to pause before watching it and ponder if I can really handle four hours of big beards and musket-fire. This weekend, I was. While watching such a sprawling epic, it’s unavoidable that a lot of thoughts and questions will spring to mind, and here are a few of mine.

The Way Wargaming Should Be! (Battlegames: Table Top Teasers Vol. 1)

These days, wargaming is dominated by points-based systems where two equally matched sides slug it out. It is a style of play encouraged by most of the industry’s big names including Warhammer, Flames of War, and Field of Glory. However, in my humble opinion, these games often lack the flavour and the tactical challenge that makes wargaming so appealing.

A Pike and Shot Renaissance?

There was a time when “Pike and Shot” was one of the most popular periods in which to wargame. It’s not surprising; The English Civil War was the last major war fought on English soil and its battlefields are littered about the country. And yet, over the last few decades “Pike and Shot” gaming has declined until it has become something of a rarity at shows and conventions.

Taking the Plunge (Testing out Army Painter - Quickshade)

There has been a lot of talk lately in the wargame community about “dipping”. That is, taking a quickly painted miniature and then dipping it into a shading solution to provide instant depth to a paint job. Now, when it comes to miniature painting, I’m a bit of a traditionalist. I like nice, clean paint jobs. My own style tends to involve black-lining, dry brushing, and layering in that order. So, when I was first handed a can of the new Army Painter – Quickshade, I turned up my nose and scoffed loudly.

Gobble Gobble!

Here at the Osprey UK offices, it is just another Thursday filled with tanks, muskets, and cavalry charges. But somewhere over the ocean I know my family is just rising to a tough day of food, football, and more food. It is Thanksgiving Day, a holiday wonderful for its simplicity. It is also a day that American’s tend to think a lot about their Armed Forces, about the soldiers, sailors, and airmen who are far from home.

Atlanta: Sherman didn’t burn it all!

A priest and a doctor fight to save their city. While researching another project, I came across a couple of interesting notes concerning the burning of Atlanta during the American Civil War, or rather, the parts of the city that didn’t burn. The Union army captured the city of Atlanta in 1864, and General Sherman decided to make a statement of warning to the rest of the confederacy by burning the city down. However two men, a doctor and a priest, conspired to make sure that at least some parts of the city were saved.

Special Ops vs. Zombies!

When the guys over at Ambush Alley Games sent me a copy of their new game, Ambush Z, I was initially sceptical. Not at the quality of the product. Having read, reviewed, and loved, the original Ambush Alley game, I knew this would be a quality publication. However, I had to wonder if throwing a few zombie rules into Ambush Alley really warranted a full new game and the $20 sticker price?

Ambush Alley - A very clever wargame

The debt owed to a moss-covered soldier

In war, casualty figures are often broken down into three categories: killed, wounded, and missing. In my opinion, it is that third category that is often the saddest. It’s true that some of those missing are later found or have been captured by the enemy, but in many cases they have simply vanished, lost in the violent chaos of war....

Fourth of July

Growing up in the southern United States, my overriding memory of the Fourth of July is heat. Hot, sticky, oppressive air that caused the sweat to run down your face before you’d made it from the air-conditioned house to the air-conditioned car. Most years, it also rained, which just made things worse, turning the whole world into a giant steam bath. But it never stopped anyone…

More Great Military Science Fiction after Starship Troopers

Dear John, Now that you have read and apparently enjoyed Starship Troopers, I thought it might interest you to know that it is only the beginning. When Robert Heinlein invented powered-infantry armor and dropped soldiers in pods from spaceships, he also helped create a new subgenre called military science fiction.

Baseball and War

There is a spring-time crispness in the Oxford air, and even though I now live in the United Kingdom, it still reminds me of baseball. War on Terror - Political Satire or a Board game too far?

The Great War In Miniature

Despite its size and historical significance, World War I has never been a popular subject for wargamers. There is a perception that compared to the wars that came before and after it, World War I was a conflict filled with drab uniforms, little unit variation, and few tactics other than sitting in a muddy trench and the occasional suicidal charge into machinegun fire. Thus, when Warhammer Historical announced their next game would be The Great War, they set themselves quite a challenge...
