Tarbox Toy Soldiers: The Osprey Store of the Month!

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of spending some time at Tarbox Toy Soldiers on Steinwehr Avenue in Gettysburg, PA. The little shop stands only a minute’s walk from the main battlefield tour bus company in the center of the downtown shopping area. After taking the two-hour bus tour, which was expertly narrated by a licensed tour guide, I popped over to see Charles Tarbox, the owner of the eponymous store.

Ed Shames, from the Band of Brothers, talks about Tonight We Die as Men

This is a clip of Ed Shames, who was a member of the famous Band of Brothers, giving a talk at one of the recent booksignings for Tonight we Die as Men: The untold story of Third Battalion 506 Parachute Infantry Regiment from Toccoa to D-Day. Ed was actually a member of the Third Battalion 506 PIR on D-Day, only moving across to the more famous Easy Company later in the war, and as well as writing the foreword for the book, he also helped Ian and Roger with some of their first hand research.

Updates from the Road, US Style

Saturday May 30th, Armed Forces Day, saw the Osprey traveling show in two locations on the East Coast. Team A, consisting of Larry, Shirley and Shirley's husband, Mark, was at the Army War College in Carlisle for the annual Army Heritage Day. Team B, consisting of yours truly, was in Newport News at the Virginia War Museum for their annual toy soldier timeline event. I've not yet received Team A's show report, but my event was an excellent success.

Where are all the Samurai on this blog?

I was recently complaining to Richard about the lack of Samurai-related material on the Osprey blog and learned that among our small but intrepid staff there is no one who knows all that much about the Japanese warrior elite. You know how it is when you ask a question, you get appointed to head the committee. This morning I came across a little tidbit that I’m sure every Ospreyista knows, but I was not aware of---guns were forbidden in Japan, which made swords the most powerful weapon in the land. The gem appeared in the April/May issue of History Magazine in an article called “A Heroic Epic of Japan: The 47 Ronin.”

New historical military action figures - based on Osprey artwork!

Osprey and Uniamax Toys have combined to produce the world’s first historically-accurate action figures called Ages of Action—a new line of authentically detailed and accessorized 1:18 scale historical action figures. These highly collectible “warriors of the ancient world” are based on artwork from our series artwork. The new Ages of Action line features five warriors with multiple points of articulation for realistic poses. Tonight We Die as Men Tour log

My journey began on April 26th when I left home for Maryland where the following day I would meet Ian Gardner and Roger Day for the first time. Ian and Roger were flying in from New Orleans, the first stop on their US tour, where they did a slide show and signing at the National WWII Museum. On Wednesday the 29th of April, we met up with Col Shames, a platoon leader in the famed Band of Brothers, and headed up to the Army's Ft Meade base. We were met there by two representatives from our distributor, Random House, and were given a warm welcome by the base exchange's store manager, Vincent James, and his assistant, Mercy Marul

I recently received an email from my friends at W. Britain announcing the release of 2 new sets of figures based on Osprey artwork. There is a new set of figures modeled after Angus McBride’s Zulu War artwork and a set of WWII paratroopers from Ron Volstad’s World War II collection. US Navy Seal Vs. Pirate

A colleague of mine who shares office space with us here in New York suggested the above title for a new DUEL issue. A big part of me loves the idea. I was really excited when I heard about the rescue of the Maersk captain through the cool professionalism of the Navy snipers who parachuted onto the ship before taking out the pirates ...at dusk from 75' away.

Re-enactors, and football shirts

A dear friend of the Osprey NY office (and customer) is Fred Henders from Illinois. The first time I met Fred he was adorned from head-to-toe in maroon, the color of his favorite football team, the Alabama Crimson Tide. Twice a month, Fred and his wife make the 1,000 mile drive from their home outside Chicago to Tuscaloosa AL for Crimson Tide home games.

Osprey visit WRAM

On February 20-21 the Osprey New York office, together with our intrepid freelancer, Larry Weindorf, schlepped up to White Plains New York for WRAM, the annual aero modeling swap-meet and contest. Unlike other aviation events where the focus is firmly on vintage WWII aircraft and/or modern military demonstration teams, this show brings out a large number of WWI and golden era enthusiasts.

Buffalo Soldiers Finally Get their Due

The New York Times closes the loop between the amazing election of Barak Obama as America's first African-American president and the incredible bravery of the Tuskegee Airmen, who have been invited to Mr. Obama's inauguration: "Thousands of people who participated in the fight for civil rights over several decades helped pave the way for Mr. Obama’s triumph. But the Tuskegee Airmen have a special place in history. Their bravery during the war — on behalf of a country that actively discriminated against them — helped persuade President Harry S. Truman to desegregate the military in 1948."

Officer candidate tags Osprey book

Officer Training School candidate, Sean Batson, was recently interviewed by a reporter from the Andrews Air Force Base newsletter, The Capitol City Flyer. Former Staff Sgt. Baston, who was cited by his colonel as " one of the most reliable military members I have seen,” said he is currently reading Red Eagles by Steve Davies.

Holiday Cheer

When I was at Gettysburg for the 4th of July reenactment remembrance this summer, our table was next to that of the Civil War Preservation Trust.

Under my Christmas Tree

I just opened the December issue of “History,” the History Book Club’s monthly magazine and sale flyer, and found a number of gems I’ll be asking Santa to place under my Christmas tree this year. The main selection of the month is Danger’s Hour by Maxwell Taylor Kennedy, the son of the late Robert F. Kennedy—and the review is written by one my favorite people in this business, Dennis Showalter. He writes, “[Kennedy] makes a sparkling breakthrough into military history in a book that uses a kamikaze attack to illustrate a fundamental clash of cultures.” Now that’s high praise from one of the best!

The Battlefield Store

Recently while killing time before a sales call in the Twin Cities, where the temperature this time of year is 20 degrees colder than in my beloved state of New Jersey, I discovered a little gem. Hidden behind overgrown hemlocks that stand like the angels guarding the garden of Eden, I unknowingly drove past The Battlefield Store three times before I could coax my sat nav into finding the place.

The folks at HMGS (Historical Miniature Gaming Society) Midwest have got a fantastic little journal called (what else?) Historical Miniature Gamer. In a series of recent articles Michael Koznarsky shows readers how to build a Border Reiver Tower House, using artwork from Fortress 46 (Castles and Tower Houses of the Scottish Clans 1450-1650).

Honoring the Dead

There’s a story in the Associated Press today about an enterprising pilot and WWII aviation aficionado who has undertaken a truly monumental task. Mark Noah of Florida is using the proceeds from his historic aviation business to fund efforts to identify the remains of 542 sailors and marines who lost their lives in WWIIs bloody battle of Tawara.

I spent last week in Osprey's UK office and the thought stuck me that there should be some sort scholarship program--perhaps sponsored and paid for by the National Trust--to afford a lucky winner or two the opportunity to spend a week among the Osprey team at HQ.

Civil War Flag Restored

There's an amazing story out of Indiana today, which is where I happen to be! JASPER, Ind. — A rare piece of history, an American flag that somehow survived the epic Civil War battles of Antietam, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg and the ensuing 147 years, will be unveiled at 2 p.m. EST on Nov. 9 at the Dubois County Museum.

Interview with a modeller

I recently had the chance to interview Gary Edmundson, one of the authors of our Modelling series. Gary was born in Sunderland in 1956. At the age of ten he emigrated with his family to Canada. He is currently living in Fort Saskatchewan, working in the chemical industry as an analyser technician. An interest in military aviation led to building military models for a hobby and Gary is now a regular contributor to military modelling magazines.

250th Anniversary French and Indian War

2008 marks the 250th anniversary of the French & Indian War and there are many events to mark it this summer. The capstone will be the Reenactment of the Battle of Carillon at Fort Ticonderoga on June 27-29. Osprey books referenced in dissertation

This sort of thing may happen everyday, I don't know. But I have to say I was pretty jazzed when I met Major Grant T. Weller, Assistant Professor of History at The Air Force Academy last month. He stopped by our booth at the meeting for the Society of Military Historians to show us his dissertation entitled, “‘Come Hell, High Water or Nazis’: The US Army Quartermaster Corps Develops and Implements the First Motorized Logistics System, 1919 – 1945.”

Real Life Starship Troopers

A colleague recently encouraged me to read the Sci Fi classic Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein. I've not read a whole lot of Sci Fi, but I enjoy it when I allow for the indulgence and this was no exception. The plotline is a bit slow, with several long passages about the necessity of self-sacrifice in a civil, democratic society, but these were not unpleasurable and I very much appreciated the force of Heinlein's argument...
