I started working at Osprey as a part-time intern while still in undergrad, and a year later, was offered a full-time spot after graduating from NYU. I’m joining up with the blog to add another US voice to the mix – we don’t want to leave John on his own for too long, after all. My main areas of interest are the American Revolution and Civil War, but I’ll be blogging mostly about the Osprey life in the US: shows, events, book reviews, etc.

I’ll also share any interesting books, articles and websites I happen upon in my history adventures. As for my favorite tank, I’m not sure I could pick one, but if I could broaden the choice to my favorite armored “vehicle” (think: anything New Vanguard appropriate) I would opt for the Confederate and Union Ironclads.

I grew up in Annapolis; I’m partial to things that float.

Osprey Books - The Perfect All-Around Reference Book?

We all know that Osprey's titles have proved valuable to hobbyists since the first Men-At-Arms titles arrived on the scene 464 volumes ago. Modelers (or modellers, for our British friends), wargamers, toy soldier collectors, re-enactors - all come to Osprey for preliminary research, detailed accounts of campaigns, uniforms, etc. But who else draws on the information in our volumes? You might be surprised.

HBO's Pacific Sources

I promise John and I talk and think about more than just HBO's The Pacific over here in New York, despite my insistence on only posting about Pacific-related subjects. This one is slightly different, though. I'm actually wondering if any of you have read either of the source books for HBO's series: Helmet for My Pillow, by Robert Leckie, or With the Old Breed, by Eugene Sledge.

HBO's "The Pacific" Round-Up

The talk of our small office has been the new HBO miniseries, "The Pacific," produced by the award-winning team that brought us Band of Brothers: Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. The two make an impressive duo, and "The Pacific" promises not to disappoint. The 10-part series will air on Sunday, March 14th, and slowly but surely, more information on the series is becoming available.

Osprey Goes Steampunk!

Last month, a decent-sized stack of Osprey and Shire titles made their first-ever appearance at a steampunk convention - this year's Windy Con, in Chicago, IL. Windy Con is an annual comic convention and the theme for 2009 was steampunk.

The Osprey staff will be heading down to Williamsburg in just a few days (myself, John Tintera and Richard Sullivan), so I wanted to be sure to give one last reminder to make your hotel reservations and travel plans now, and provide a few last-minute updates.

Military History Weekend Update

The Military History Weekend is shaping up to be quite an event! While it is certainly quite different to be planning an event rather than "just" attending (not to suggest that attending or vending is ever as simple as that), it has been a lot of fun so far...

William Ruxton's World War I Scrapbook

Osprey New York have just moved office, which inevitably means that we have had some serious cleaning out to do. When I started this process I stumbled across some very odd items - a series of primed but unpainted miniatures that I will hopefully be painting with an old co-worker, some George R.R. Martin books, a large metal statue of a fairie. But the most interesting so far was a scrapbook of papers and photos from 2nd Lt William Ruxton during his years in France during World War I.

The Age Old Question: Pirates vs. Ninjas?

Not too long ago, the question of pirates vs ninjas was quite the internet phenomenon, which quickly spread to video games and books. At the end of June, the question became central to the Osprey booth at Origins, with Shirley in full ninja regalia selling Osprey books and Britains figures.

Wear Your Favorite Osprey Book!

Last weekend I had the honor of going to the Museum Store Association trade show in Phoenix, and while my New York colleagues were stuck in a torrential downpour all week, I was off enjoying a variety of museum display items in sunny, 95-degree Arizona. I was particularly excited to meet the reps from Legacy of Valor, who have licensed loads of Osprey artwork to be printed on t-shirts, long sleeve shirts and hoodies (or jumpers, as I think you call them in the UK).

Expect the Unexpected - the military origins of Winnie the Pooh

Here's one I bet you didn't know: During WWI, Canadian troops were transported to Europe via eastern Canada, specifically through Winnipeg. On his stopover in Winnipeg, Lt Harry Colebourn bought a small black bear cub from a hunter who had killed its mother. He named the bear Winnipeg, or Winnie for short (know where this is going now?).

New Research Reveals Truth of Hitler's Death

New research into FBI records, previously sealed, suggests that Hitler may not have committed suicide, after all. I thought I'd share with you this link to World War 2 Database, run by World War II blogger, Osprey reviewer and friend to the Osprey NY office, Peter Chen.

Osprey Visits Cold Wars in Lancaster, PA

Last weekend, I had the honor of representing Osprey at my first ever wargaming convention - Cold Wars in Lancaster, PA. After a bit of a mishap finding the Lancaster Host Resort (which should have been quite easy, as it is enormous!), I stumbled into what I believe must have been a miniature army paradise... and an Osprey employee/history enthusiast's heaven.
