Battleground Prussia - Out Next Month!
August 24, 2010 12:00 AM
Guest Author Prit Buttar explains his motivation for writing this detailed history of the fall of Germany's Eastern Front.
Several years ago, an elderly lady told me an extraordinary story, of how she grew up in a part of Germany that no longer exists, how she worked as a nurse during the war, and how she fled her homeland under fire from the Red Army. Intrigued by her story, I started to research the end of the war in East Prussia and found that there was almost nothing available in English that gave a detailed account of the fighting. The more I read about the apocalyptic battles in East and West Prussia, and about the greatest seaborne evacuation in history, the more I wanted to write about it. This book is the end result, and after living and breathing this project for so many years, it is a great feeling to see it in print. I hope you find it as satisfying to read as I did to write.

Battleground Prussia is released in September is is currently available to pre-order.

Osprey's rigidly defined "formats" have their limitations and problems, but at least we have a very good idea of what we'll be getting even without leafing through the books.
With the General Military stuff, it's a bit of a shot in the dark.
The topic couldn't interest me more, but I'd like to know how, for instance, how many maps this book includes, if they're similar to those we'd find in a Campaign title, and so on. Previews would be much appreciated, as I fear that the local bookstore where I used to get my Ospreys (pre-credit card ;-) ) won't stock this one.

Hi Hugo.
There are about 16 maps in the book, in the Campaign style, but in black and white, not colour. There are also a couple of photograph plate sections in the book. You might like to visit the author's web page, there are some bits and pieces there that had to be cut from the book, some extracts, some examples of maps and some anecdotes that we couldn't fit into the book or which were culled by our ruthless editors ;-)
You can see all of this at

Thanks a million.
I've read the excerpts at Dr. Buttar's webpage and it seems years of research and a lot of work went into this. I'm getting it.
I won't complain about the monochrome rather than colour maps as that's probably one of the reasons why the book's price is fairly competitive considering the number of pages.
