Happy Thanksgiving!
November 26, 2009 12:00 AM
From everyone here at Osprey!
No matter how you may feel about the American Civil War (or War of Northern Aggression) all Americans can thank Abraham Lincoln for...
A day off work, a chance to be with your family and friends, a one-day license for gluttony, and a chance to root for whoever is playing against the Dallas Cowboys!

And that would be the beyond-and-below miserable Oakland Raiders, so I think l'll have to crack another Peter Lovesey mystery and go back for more pie.
Not to fear--there is still pulling for the Green Bay Packers over the Lions!
Peace and good will to all in Britain.

As an Oakland Raiders fan, it pains me to agree with you... but I shall root for them all the same...

According to legend, the first Thanksgiving was celebrated by Pilgrims (Puritan English settlers) and local natives. Abraham Lincoln declared the previously unofficial holiday to be a national holiday during the American Civil War.
Since then, the spirit of the holiday has been to put aside such minor differences as the 'Oxford comma', and be thankful that we have good friends who will stand beside us.

I prefer "War of Secession" to either "American Civil War" or "War of Northern Aggression." The former is innaccurate because it assumes both sides fought for control of a particular government and the latter sounds too emotional, bitter and informal.
Some of us like to think that the first Thanksgiving dinner was in Virginia. Or if you ask my sister, it was in Saint Augustine, Florida.
