Okay, its not a photograph. It is a charcoal drawing by Wladyslaw T. Benda of Polish soldiers in World War I.

They don't look like Polish soldiers at all. Neither helmets nor the eagle are Polish.

Are they Polish soldiers in the German army of WW1? The style of the picture seems to be anti-war in nature? Any further details as this would make a useful source to analyse with my A-Level students?

Anyone know why the lead soldier is just holdng up his flag as hes coming out of the trench? is he surrendering? and those are cavalry swords in the foreground, right?

This artist was renowned for his drawings of Polish soldiers of both World Wars, yet this one seems not to be one of them. Maybe it's an allegory of Germany's downfall.

I must admit, I wasn't sure they were Polish when I put it up. That's what I get for trusting the notes from the Library of Congress!
