The Future of New Vanguard
August 12, 2010 12:00 AM
Hot on the heels of the Future of RAID blog, here's a rundown of the New Vanguard books we've got coming out over the next year or so...
Publishing later this year, we have:
Even if I wasn't working on these books, I'd be very excited to get my hands on them! The Hind is one of my favourite military vehicles, and it's long overdue for inclusion in the New Vanguard series. The French tanks books is the really good type of study and analysis that one expects from Steven Zaloga, while the sheer size of the Nimitz carriers meant that we had to get somewhat creative with our usual design! It's a really detailed look at these mammoth vessels, and and great addition to the line. Last, but not least, Lawrence Burr's two-volume look at the US Navy's fast battleships is full of great technical and operational detail.
Moving into 2011, we've got a very solid line-up of 11 (yes, 11 – one more than normal) titles, with something for almost everyone:
- NVG 175: US Submarines 1900–35 (Jan)
- NVG 176: Imperial Japanese Navy Heavy Cruisers 1941–45 (Feb)
-
NVG 177: Humber Light Reconnaissance Car 1941–45 (Mar)
-
NVG 178: Mark V Tank (Apr)
- NVG 179: Special Operations Patrol Vehicles: Afghanistan and Iraq (May)
- NVG 180: Kamikaze: Japanese Special Attack Weapons 1944–45 (Jun)
- NVG 181: Yangtze River Gunboats 1900–47 (Jun)
- NVG 182: Italian Battleships 1940–45 (Aug)
- NVG 183: Warships of the Anglo-Dutch Wars 1652–74 (Sept)
- NVG 184: Vietnam Gun Trucks (Oct)
- NVG ???: LAV-25 (Nov) - we don't even have a number allocated for this book yet!
I hope you like what's coming. Keep an eye out for more information and maybe a sneak peek or two further down the line...

I too am especially looking forward to NVG 181: Yangtze River Gunboats 1900–47. I have been intrigued by the US Navy's Yangtze Patrol ever since I saw the movie "The Sand Pebbles" about 2 years ago.

I'm quite thrilled with all the titles but Squadron/Signal put out a title on Japanese Heavy Cruisers of WW II fairly recently so I wouldn't consider that title a publishing priority.
Suggestions: U.S. Armor & Artillery of WW I, German Destroyers of WW I, American Artillery 1775-1815, British Aircraft Carriers 1918-39. Railway Guns of WW I

Id like to see more books for the Battle Order series. The last time there was a servey done fot that series a suggestion about a book on the U.S.Navy's Mobile Riverine Force got a strong response.

I'm very impressed with these new titles.I would like to see books on the M-1 Abrams tank and Bradley fighting vehicles from 1991 to the present as well as new platforms such as the M.R.A.P family of vehicles and the Himars rocket artillery system as well as it's big brother the MLARS rocket lauchers.

I'm disappointed to see that French equipment continues to very ill covered on these series. Recent NVG 173 was an isolated exception. There are quite significant tanks, armored cars, artillery pieces and ships that must be issued on the series. The Chinese arsenal could also be considered in order to select one or two pieces.
Besides that, this is a good collection, which I recommend for my students (in Portugal) as a basis for brief presentations.
Thanks
