As I have some interest in model sailing ships, I am glad to see the mention of Billings Boats. When I am not writing about sailing ships, I am generally working on a model of one. However, take it from me, a frigate is a poor choice for a first model. This is not just because of the complexity. Many beginners get frustrated at the slow rate of progress.

But there is another issue. There is a learning curve when you are working in a new modeling media. And a frigate takes so long to build that by the time you get to the mizzen mast (if you are smart you start at the front and work your way back) you have gotten so much better that the front of the ship looks like it was built by a different person.

Don't take this as a knock on the Billings Constitution. My recommendation for those interested in building a sailing warship is to start with an armed cutter as a first project, then do a schooner or brig next. Then tackle a full-rigged ship. (Billing has those, too.)
