Are you sure that "the introduction of cocaine to Britain during WWI" is correct? I thought Sherlock Holmes was on cocaine until his "death" in 1893.

Cocaine was around for centuries (and used as a recreational drug) long before the arrival of the Canadians in WW1. As WonderingEra correctly points out, in the Sherlock Holmes stories "a seven per cent solution" was used to stave off the ennui between cases. As Conan Doyle trained as a medical student and had a deep understanding of the darker side of life, I think we can take his knowledge as reliable. Don't forget that cocaine was also in the original recipe of Coca-Cola, which wasn't sold as a light refreshment but as a patent medecine!
