Does anybody remember the Microprose F-15E Strike Eagle and F-19 Stealth fighter PC flight simulator games 20 years ago? If you had to bail out over the ocean, the game had you rescued by a V-22 Osprey. Goes to show you how long that bird has been in development...

I've been hearing about this thing since I was in elementary school, and I've never figured out how it's better than a plain old helicopter.

Can anyone enlighten me?

I was heavily involved in the development and flight test of the V-22 Osprey. It has outstanding capabilities that are unmatched. It also is expensive and has had a tortuous and lengthy development. Any conclusions about its success or failure are premature.

The recent article about the V-22 in Time magazine was drivel. That rag should stick subjects about which is has subject matter expertise, such as Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.

A book about from Osprey with the title "V-22 Osprey Units in Combat" would be very nice in a few years.

Marc, the V-22 Osprey is faster and has a longer range than a helicopter. There are fundamental aerodynamic limitations on helicopter performance that do not apply to a tiltrotor.

I would love it if Kenneth P. Katz could detail for us what the tactical requirements were that led the Air Force to feel the need for the tiltrotor.
