Libya has never operated Chinese-built 'MiG' variants. As for the Alouettes, these were previously operated from Malta by the Libyan Arab Air Force and were later handed over to the local authorities. In most cases of defections of this kind, the aircraft are dismantled and returned to their rightful owner.

I guess it's more diplomatic to return the aircraft, as there's been numerous cases of Soviet aircraft defecting, being ripped apart and then sent home again. Not much point in keeping it if you don't need it and have already dismantled it (Viktor Belenko's MiG-25 was sent home in 30 separate crates, which must have annoyed the Russians no end). The Israelis do seem to like hanging on to their prizes, though, and sometimes even arrange for them to fall into their hands (1966's Operation Diamond resulted in a MiG-21 being analysed, the knowledge being put to good use in the Six-Day War. The plane wound up in America).

The Iranians never returned all those Iraqi planes that fled to their airfields during Operation Desert Storm 20 years ago. The Iranians simply intergrated them into their own air force.

A reason Iran kept the Iraqi aircraft was that it could. They had no love for Iraq (having just finished a war with Saddam's Iraq.Especially since, even though keeping them was technically an act of war, Iran knew that that Iraq was in no position to enforce a demand for the return of the aircraft through military action.

The situation is a tad different with Malta and Libya. Libya and Malta have been allies off and on. While it would not quite be like Canada not returning United States aircraft flown to Canada, it would be like Mexico refusing to return US Aircraft. Especially once Khadaffi is gone.

Still . . . maybe some Maltese air force official with a sense of history could name the two aircraft "Faith" and "Hope" and maybe wait for a "Charity" to join them.

(On the other hand, I would advise against naming them "Hope" and "Change." Hasn't worked out that great.)

What is going on in Libya does tend to show things have not changed that much there over the last two centuries. As Osprey readers can discover for themselves if they get an upcoming Osprey that takes place in what is now Libya. (And that one has a Maltese connection, too.)
