Hello Joe, and thanks for the mention. I'm glad you're enjoying Battlegames.

I ought to point out that the strapline on the magazine is "The spirit of wargaming", rather than "the spirit of Old School wargaming", as it's possible for wargames to be played in the right spirit whether they are technically 'old school' or not. (Indeed, the term 'old school' becomes quite tricky to define if you put it under the magnifying glass, as my recent article in Wargames Soldiers and Strategy 26 attempts to explain.)

But I think you have it in a nutshell: the older we get, the more 'real world' pressures we have to deal with, the more we look to our hobby to be a simple, fun, relaxing pastime. We want games that flow better, with less time spent in complex calculation and the mathematics of minutiae, leaving more time for imagination and the creation of narrative. In my experience, simplicity can actually often lead to a surprisingly sophisticated and elegant outcome, which makes our wargaming more satisfying, not less.
