At the beginning of June I posted up a quick blog about Terry Crowdy, author of Deceiving Hitler and Military Misdemeanours, who was speaking at the International Napoleonic Symposium. in Austria. Set up to commemorate the anniversary of the 1809 campaigns, Terry was due to present a talk about the life of a conscript. The full lecture is due to be published online by the International Napoleonic Symposium (we will link to it as soon as it is available), but until then, Terry has very kindly provided us with a brief synopsis of his talk.

Last week I attended a seminar at the Portuguese Embassy on the British and Portuguese role during the Peninsular War. The room was full of academics, military, government and interested parties from both countries drawn together to commemorate the contributions of both countries to the eventual defeat of Napoleon and France during the Napoleonic Wars.

On Wednesday, Osprey author Terry Crowdy is heading to Vienna to speak at the International Napoleonic Symposium. an event that has been organised for the bicentennial of Napoleon's campaigns against Austria in 1809.
On Thursday he will be presenting a paper on 'a conscript's story' - telling the story of a French soldier as he is conscripted, (barely) trained and sent off on campaign.

Last weekend I had the honor of going to the Museum Store Association trade show in Phoenix, and while my New York colleagues were stuck in a torrential downpour all week, I was off enjoying a variety of museum display items in sunny, 95-degree Arizona. I was particularly excited to meet the reps from Legacy of Valor, who have licensed loads of Osprey artwork to be printed on t-shirts, long sleeve shirts and hoodies (or jumpers, as I think you call them in the UK).

Last week I visited the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Trust (SOFO) an organisation that houses the archives and military memorabilia of three Oxfordshire regiments - the Oxfordshire OTC, Oxfordshire Yeomanry and Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry (43rd and 52nd).

I know that it is a couple of months away but my thoughts are turning to Lancaster PA in July and Historicon. Soon it will be time to fly off to the heat of Pennsylvania for a busy few days showing our latest to the hordes that descend on the show and drinking the odd beer.

As a long-time Osprey fan, one of the most frustrating aspects of having published thousands of books in their 40-year history is the inevitable fact that sometimes, some of them will be out-of-print. In best-case scenarios, this is resolved by finding a second-hand copy; in a worst-case scenario, a volume will have been out of print for so long that it's impossible to find a copy that doesn't cost the GDP of a small banana republic.

Hollywood is all about rebooting characters at the minute. Batman got a reboot. Then the reboot got a sequel which became one of the most successful films of all time. Bond has been rebooted - the humour and gadgets are gone and replaced by gritty punchy seat of your pants action. Which went on to spawn another film. Star Trek has been rebooted, even Wolverine has been rebooted in a way.

The results of a series of strategic meetings in 2007/08 are now starting to filter through into new series and new titles. Alongside Raid in September and Command in 2010 we are pleased to announce another new series scheduled for 2010. This new series War Animal reflects the unprecedented response to our recent New Vanguard title on War Elephants and allows us to examine from yet another previously unexplored angle, forgotten aspects of both campaigns and combatants.

Every now and then we like to try something a little different. Last year it was the hugely popular Men-at-Arms Celebration. This year our departure from our usual book publishing programme came in the form of Battle: The Osprey Postcard Collection.
