The gap in the bicentennials 2001-5 and the simultaneous anti-French propaganda in the US did a lot of damage especiallyas as the following two years are perceived as French walkovers. However, the Peninsula and the balanced 1809 campaign should help to revive popularity (along perhaps with a fascination in the media with Mrs. Sarkozy!).

Unfortunately, there has been quite a lot of "environmental work" (recycling rubbish) from a few hardback publishers and the subject does seem to have attracted rather more than its fair share o0f the the village idiots and keepers of the true flame, who feel the strange need to shout new research down.

I'd appreciate if sometimes, British people (some of) them, stop deppising the Spanish Armies in the "Peninsular War", because it was them (us) who fought French Armies (even Napoleon) 1808~1814. While the country was invaded and just a couple of regions were free. Heck, even we fought against Napoleon... and without Brittish help, who, oh, were kind enought to just pillage their allies' cities and disdain their soldieres as barbaric, cowards, good-for-nothing. Well, thank you.

Kgw no insult intended. I was thinking about Talavera and Cuesta when I wrote it but battles like Bailén should not be forgotten. And as I mentioned the guerillas were particularly effective.
