I recently had the chance to interview Gary Edmundson, one of the authors of our Modelling series. Gary was born in Sunderland in 1956. At the age of ten he emigrated with his family to Canada. He is currently living in Fort Saskatchewan, working in the chemical industry as an analyser technician. An interest in military aviation led to building military models for a hobby and Gary is now a regular contributor to military modelling magazines.

Recently, I became a member of a very select, very elite club within the hallowed halls of Osprey (it's like the Illuminati, but with more tanks...)

On September 27th, The Wall Street Journal reported on defense department appropriations for the new fiscal year. Here’s a partial list of new hardware that’s being ordered by the US government, and where additional funds are being allocated for continued research and development:

In August next year we’ll be publishing a book on the T-62 Main Battle Tank by Steve Zaloga (New Vanguard 158). In the meantime, if Cold War tanks are your thing you can help sponsor your very own T-62!

In the American Civil War being in combat was sometimes referred to as ‘Seeing the Elephant’. The reason given was that battle, like an Elephant, was hard to describe, but you knew it when you saw it.
I thought I knew an Elephant too. As an illustrator, they’d come up from time to time, I had a favourite reference book or two and I could nick a pose from a photograph when I needed it. When the New Vanguard title ‘War Elephants’ appeared on my radar though, I knew it was time to up my elephantine game....

A flurry of emails have been flying round the office over the last couple of hours, all saying more or less the same thing, something along the lines of "You have to see this video taken in Georgia"...

Recently, with one of my typical flights of fancy, I started to ponder on some of the military sayings and quotes that have achieved fame throughout history. My personal favourites are:

On October 31, 1780, the HMS Ontario, a 22-gun brig sloop was swamped by a gale as she crossed Lake Ontario from Fort Niagara. Lost with all hands, 60 British soldiers, 40 mainly Canadian crew and possibly as many as 30 American prisoners-of-war, she remained at the bottom of the lake for 228 years, before being discovered some 500 feet down...
