Osprey announce deal to produce audiobooks
Some really cool news has just broken - the ink is drying on an agreement between us and a company called Creative Content to turn some of our books into audiobooks.
If you are into the more 'businessy' side of things you could read the entire press release about the deal here. But, suffice to say we are all really excited about the possibilities that this deal opens up. We can see it now, Osprey fans settling down to a good book whilst on that long drive across the country. Or to keep them occupied on that long flight. Or even popping an Osprey book on to their ipod so that they can indulge their military history habit, whilst going for a run or working out in the gym!
Obviously not all of our books are ideal candidates for audiobooks. I don't think we will ever 'see' (hear?) an audiobook version of a Men-at-Arms or Warrior because of the inherent visual nature of those books. Its a little hard to describe figure plates! But we think our Essential History series would fit the bill quite nicely - as would a lot of our General military books. Even our Campaign series is a possibility, although describing the Bird's-eye-view is going to be challenging!
Which of our books would you most like to see turned into an audiobook?
COMMENTS
You guys are going to spoil my best joke about writing for Osprey -- that it is like writing for Playboy. Everyone says the reason they pick the thing up are the great stories, but the real reason is the pictures.
Seriously, a good RAID or DUEL would make a candidate for an audiobook. Certainly there is a lot of narrative in a RAID, because it is telling a story about a specific event. Grierson's Raid is an example of what I mean. It follows a linear narrative path that is not overly dependent upon pictures. Yes, you miss the BEV, but I think the word pictures in the text would be a good substitute. (Admittedly, I am a bit biased when it comes to the text. . .) Similarly one of the Duels that explains the why of what is happening as well as the what would make a good audiobook.
