Relentless served mostly in Eastern Waters. Try http://www.naval-history.net/xGM-Chrono-10DD-53R-Relentless.htm

The sticks on the third picture appear to be Indian Clubs. They were a popular form of exercise equipment from the late 1800s through the middle of the 20th century. They could be used as arm weights, or for juggling. They were especially popular in Britain, as I recall. They formed a frequent murder weapon in the between wars English mystery stories.

Wikipedia has a page on them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_clubs

Could Relentless be anchored off Malta?
Regarding PT kit, alongside the Indian Clubs they would have also worked out with the even higher-tech Medicine Ball.
Speaking of wartime photos, is anybody else's mother in an Osprey book? Mine features in MAA 370 WWII Allied Nursing Services. I wonder if she, at RNH Plymouth, or my father, a Naval Surgeon there and on a number of ships, ever looked after your Grandad, Richard!
