Though not having much shooting experience with the AK, I must for my part admit that I was positively surprised with the accuracy of the AK (7.62 cal. version with folding stock) in semi auto up to 200 meters, compared to what I had been told beforehand.
Of course in general it can't compete with a 5.56 weapon like the Armalite family of weapons in terms of balistics accuracy.
But then I'm not too impressed with the way that Armalites are put together, as they contain way to many small springs and fiddly bits that can be destroyed or lost during dismantling of the weapon.
The AK is way better than the Armalites in that respect IMO. So far it's the only weapon I've disassembled assembled first time without previous instruction or aid from instructor. From an engineering point of view it's put together in a way that's just wonderfuly logical.
I stil remember well when several AKs, belonging to the unit in which I did my conscription service, were put on the table during an equipment recognition lecture, and how I sneaked up to them during a break and commited the "holy sin" of taking one of them apart and putting it together again before my instructors had time to notice.
