I watched the first season, but stopped at the beginning of the second because the trials and tribulations of the wives became too much of a distraction. Of course that aspect was the selling point that got that show on the air in the first place.

Incidentally this show is based off the book "Inside Delta Force" by Eric Haney who is under the threat of arrest if he ever steps onto Ft. Bragg because the Delta Force community believes he revealed too much of their selection process.

The Unit is a show I enjoy too. Realistically you're not going to get a 100% combat show on tv today, so you have to put up with the soapy drama behind the lines. Even classics like the Sharpe series carry an awful lot of domestic drama/romance behind the action.
Few military series can be all frontline so to speak, some like Soldier Soldier for example are virtually all soap with a bit of military action tagged on.
The 1980s Vietnam based Tour of Duty (available on R1 DVD) was almost all combat stuff in its first season but the network wanted more romance and female interest in the second season which of course turned off male viewers.
Back in the 60s when War shows were more straightforward there's an oddity called Rat Patrol, available on R1 and R2 DVD in 25 minute episodes which is almost all devoted to jeep raiders fighting the Germans in the desert. In short bites theres barely time for any character development let alone icky romantic subplots...
One of the longest running of all is the long running WWII based Combat! on R1 DVD which varies from all action to character study and is quite dark especially in its earleir episodes (though you have to accept the numerous bloopers of Germans using painted up American post war tanks)...
Back to The Unit, I'd certainly recommend it. Particularly interesting for me was the wife's stinging condemnation of the anti-war movement, something we rarely see in the generally one sided coverage of the war on terror in most television.
