The way I heard it, Confederate troops from North Carolina were called Tarheels because they were so stubborn in battle, and didn't give an inch, as if their feet were stuck to the ground by tar. But when the origins of a word are shrouded in mystery, that's when it becomes a legend (Not an urban legend, that's another topic altogether. For some reason the term "urban legend" always brings a smile to my face.)
North Carolina also provided the largest number of men for the Confederate armies.

How aboout the story that Catherine the Great of Russia put a row of silver buttons on her soldier's cuffs so they wouldn't wipe their noses on them...any truth in this?

Simon,

I remember an episode of Cheers in which that bastion of disinformation Cliff Clavin tells the same story about Napoleon which makes me dubious about the whole thing. That said, I'll poke around and see what I can find.
