The Why of the Black Legion
Herlève
What was the motivation for those 800 who stayed under the French when Maximilian ordered them home?
And why did another 4200 join them over the next three years before Marignano?
What was the motivation? What was it about French service that was more attractive than service to Maximilian, the German princes, or their allies?
FYI -- Osprey's books on the Landsknecht and the Swiss are integral to my research on this period. I have the Codex Wallerstein and a few other books on the military arts of the period, but my Osprey books are my favorites.
