I definitely agree. Perhaps them and the Dutch in a book together as "Armies and Explorers of the 16th Century," because the Dutch were not just active in the 17th, but in the 16th century as well, along with the Portuguese, and it'd be cool to see an MAA or Elite on them.

Hi, we haven't yet covered this element of Portuguese history, however I will ensure this is passed onto the Commissioning Editor's for their consideration. We do have a number of books on the Portuguese in the Napoleonic Wars, which we are currently bringing back into print, but this title would be a good addition to either our Elite or Men-at-Arms series. Also, it is always worth filling out the 'Books I'd Like to Read' section of the site with your ideas. Thanks for your suggestions.

Such titles would be a welcome addition. Portugal was the first Christain Iberian state to free itself from Muslim domination in almost it's present geographic form in the 12th century. They also fought a number of campaigns in North Africa in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Their wars with the Dutch in the late 16th, early 17th centuries taken together constituted the first truly global or "world" war, being fought from the East Indies to Brazil. Portugal was also the last European colonial empire with large territorial holdings into the late 70s. Pretty amazing for one of the poorest nations of Europe!

Good thread and I hope Osprey take heed. It would be nice to read about the military history of the first global empire.
