Early Rome

AncientWargamer

As a romaphile i'm interested in all aspects of early roman development, not just it's military. Could Osprey do a book on the interaction between the Etruscan, Sabine and Latini peoples, not only their military but their cultural differences. Ending up with the Political conflict as "plebs" v "Patricans" in the early Republic.

thanks

I believe there is already a men at arms title about
the Early Roman period featuring the tribal wars
and the Etruscans. The title is illustrated by Richard Hook.
Interestingly or ironically enough there is
a scene with Horatio on the Bridge though most likely a legendary
figure.
The Celts of Brennus among many others might beg to differ
on Rome's attributes.

One minor caveat applies in that the title features Romulus and Remus as well as Horatio on the Bridge. These characters are not to my knowlwedge conclusively factual but fanciful. I did however enjoy the scenes of the Celtic warriors chasing down Romans. Romaphiles might take some umbrage.

I think it would be good to do a more indepth book on Romes Italian enimies....possibly a follow on the enimies of Rome Series. The Armies of early Rome is very good but I would like to find out more about the Samnites and the rest!

I agree with panzerman, tribal cultures were turned upside down when Phoenician and Greek traders sailed up the coast hunting for new metal deposits. Some tribes integrated with these civilised exploiters while others were forced up into the hills, to be a constant threat to the new "plains folk'. The discovery of copper and iron meant a economic explosion for the Etruscans and eventually to surrounding areas (Rome). Early Roman Armies was great BUT if you stick to archaeological facts, you’re going to produce a thin book, as it was. We need more assumptions on the conflict between Civilized plains folk and the tribal peoples they replaced. I'm actually trying to produce a computer war game based on these interactions, as ; http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?p=2477861#post2477861 Others are doing similar, but later period - http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?p=4309509#post4309509 Aw.
