Hellenistic armies
Panzerman
It seems there is a bit of demand for osprey to do a book on Hellenistic armies. If they do get round to doing this how would the rest of us wish for it to be presented?
For instance would we want to see one general Men at Arms the covers the whole period or maybe a couple of books for each nation (ie Seleucid etc) or maybe some books that were split depending on the time frame..for instance 323-217BC etc?
If we are going to go down the route of a book for each nation which nations would people like to see?
Of course this all hypothetical and I have possibly open a can of worms but I would be intrested to see peoples answers!

The Ptolemaic armies always interested me, for one reason or another the Egyptian Hellenistic armies are just weirdly interesting.

I think the best option would be a couple of books divided by era, so it can be possible to follow the evolution of the equipment and/or the tactics used by the armies.

Follow each of Alexander's generals, since thats how the empire broke up. Ptolomy, Seleucus, etc Each created a Hellenistic state/army. This is the easiest, and most logical way to proceed with such a huge topic.

Perhaps a MAA title on the Hellenistic Armies would be a good starting place, with individual titles on the Seleucids, Ptolemaic armies etc later on, if the first title is successful?
Personally I've wanted a good book on the subject for years.

I think the best way to cover these armies would be to separate the books into the Seleucids, Ptolemaic and Hellenistic armies. I believe this would help cover more content and provide a wider range of illustrations (always the most exciting part of an Osprey book).

All very good ideas..
I would tend to go with the differnt books for differnt nations (through want of a better term!) but I think that in itself will have its own problems.
Of course this will cover the Seleucid and Ptolemics but what about later Macedonian, Pontic, Bactrian and various other Hellenistic armies (an offshoot of that could be Hellenistic mercs!!!)
I find it puzzeling that to many ancient Greek history seems to stop at the death of Alexander the Great, this was certainly the case at Uni.
Maybe us fans of the Hellenistic armies should come together and write our own book......lol

Bring on the Greeks! I agree with all your suggestions! How about good old gruntin' Pyrrhus and his campaigns. Love to see something on the Greek campaigns on Sicily. Battle of Himera, stuff like that
