Early Carthaginian Armies
AncientWargamer
We've seen the Carthaginians against Rome but what their early years of expansion throughout the western mediterrainien. was it just phoenician trading skills that grew a naval empire or did marines also secure these overseas posessions? Good to see a book covering 800BC, founding of Carthage through to the 2nd Punic war. Possiblity concentrating on her conflicts with Greek states?

I second that motion. There's so little information available about early Carthage that I tend to forget that the Carthaginians were around for centuries before the Punic wars. The book could cover other Mediterranean nations of the time such as the Greeks, Phoenicians and Cypriots.

Early Carthaginian Armies would be a must have!! Information is kinda hard to come by. The greeks on Sicily would presumedly look the hoplites
that fought the Persians. But the Carthaginians seem to have no info on thier clothing and armor. It would be interesting to find out if the Carthaginains attacked the Greek colonies in conjunction with the Persian Invasion of Greece.
Early Carthaginian campaigns against the greeks would be a great title.

This would be a good area for Osprey to cover; I’m not too familiar with Carthaginian armies pre Punic Wars.

Thank you all for your comments. When choosing Osprey titles it can be really tough due to the level of information that is needed for both the text and the all-important illustrations. I am sure this subject can be considered if enough information is available for so early a time-frame. Our Warrior title 'Carthaginian Warrior 264–146 BC' is due for publication next Autumn.

Bad Andy, you touch on something that has been intriguing me, the possible co-ordination of the Carthaginian attack on Sicily with the Persian invasion of Greece in 480. This denied the Greeks the potential addition of a fleet as large as the Athenian one to their naval strength, which might even have persuaded the Persians not to bother. Trouble is lack of source material.....
