Slingers during Sengoku-jidai

I saw two illustrations of japanese slingers in two books by the same author. In one of the books we see an ashigaru using a tôdantai (stone throwing) weapon. This is actually a simple slingshot. In the other book we see the use of a furizunbai or tôdanzue. This is a sling on a bamboo pole. My question is: were these slingshots used, and if so, in numbers? Since i never saw or read anything about them in other books.
