It's the Wakizashi and it was usually worn with the Katana.

Samurai used mostly the tanto(=more or less a knife with a tsuba(=guard)) on the battlefield or an aekuchi(=same as tanto but without tsuba). More rarely they wore a wakizashi on the battlefield. During peacetime samurai wore the daishô(means literrally 'big/short'). This was to distinct them from other classes. It was always composed of a katana and a wakizashi.

Katana and Wakizashi, also referred to as the Daisho "Long and short" ( Daito and Shoto, "to" being "blade" ). A knife was also carried ( tanto or kodachi ).

The earlier blades were the tachi and the ken. Later World War Two blades were called gunto.
