Osprey media tie-ins
chrisw
The recent blog post about gnomes rekindled a thought I had years ago, that I was glad that Osprey had steered away from the cheap commercialism of media tie-in books, but the more I think about it, the less sure I am.
How many of us wouldn't mind reading:
Armies of Middle Earth (Men at Arms)
Biggles (Warriors)
Sgt. Rock (Warrior)
Imperial Tie Fighter (New Vanguard)
Aces of the Rebel Alliance (Aircraft of the Aces)
Imperial Stormtrooper (Elite or Warrior)
The Dirty Dozen (Elite)
Death Star (Fortress)
Klingon Warrior (Warrior)
Ewok Archers (Elite)
...or am I just being silly?

My imagination is running wild....
How about: Blood-Vomiting Zombie Tactics from "28 Days Later" (Elite), Terminator T-1000 (would that be Warrior or New Vanguard?)....
Of course, the media tie-in idea could go horribly wrong. Imagine seeing Ben Affleck's face on the cover of Campaign 62, Pearl Harbor....

Or Mel Gibson appearing in a Men-at-Arms in his Braveheart regalia...

Well, the MAA book on US Armed Forces in China 1856 - 1941 includes references to the movies The Sand Pebbles, 55 Days at Peking, and The Flying Tigers. However these are limited to one picture of a shot from the movie and a little caption of how the movie relates to the book. Personally, I would love to see a New Vanguard book on the Yangtze River Patrol gunboats. My idea for the cover is a still of the USS San Pablo steaming up the river lol!
That being said, I have mixed feelings on your idea - while getting into the realm of sci fi/fantasy/pure fiction does sound silly it would however provide Osprey with an even bigger fan base and more fans = more profit. Osprey is already pretty well known and respected and I am afraid a book on the Imperial Stormtroopers from Star Wars for example could go both ways in regards to the respect - good and bad.

how about a tie-in with Hammer Horrors?
Dracula
Castle of Fu Manchu
Captian Kronos Vampire Hunter
Carry-on films may be a bridge to far though
