Researching plane liveries....

This is a question for the artists I suppose :)
There are TONS of gret livery pics on here. However there are not so many top view pics. I assume this is mostly because its hard to find pics or descriptions of the originals :)
However when designing a model its a rather important part of the research. I have noticed that typically many of the liveries are similar from the side view from the base paint scheme (ignoring pilot specific decorations) Would finding a top view of plane with a similar overall paint scheme and applying the same wing scheme be acceptable in most peoples eyes - just changing out numbers or personal insignias it one is present?
