Any books on Russian forces in Chechnya?

BigD

Dear Osprey,

I seem to recall at one point, Osprey had a book on Russian forces in Chechnya. Is this true?

Hi BigD, thanks for the question. We had an Essential Histories title lined up on Russia's Wars with Chechnya 1994–2003 but this project has been put on hold for the time being. As and when all elements of this project are in place, and there is a suitable slot in our publishing schedule, we can look into moving it forward.

Sorry, I disagree. Osprey's precious resources need to go to full scale conflicts, not Russia's joke wars in Chechnya and Georgia. They're hopelessly one sided. No real stategy or tactics. Other more interesting conflicts are out there. Much better reading.

I'm mainly interested in the weapons, vehicles, forces (Spetznaz, marines, OMON, etc) and equimpent used. And I disagree; Chechnya is an excellent example of modern urban guerrilla warfare against a military force equipped with helicopters, something not seen in previous urban guerrilla wars.

I too believe that Osprey should cover conflicts from Chechnya and Georgia. Yes they are heavily one sided, but the Chechens did manage to get De facto independence during the First Chechen war. Also as the insurgency seems to building up again in this region I believe it’s important for Osprey to cover this conflict. Some Chechen commanders switched allegiance during both wars and were involved in the recent conflict in Georgia. Spetsnaz forces would make a good Osprey book, covering their activities in Afghanistan and Chechnya.
