Empires: Total War

When Galaxies Collide

I believe that there is the strong possibility that the two communities of Osprey and Total War may soon have more in common with the release of Empires: Total War, a personal computer game this coming March.

Creative Assembly has been producing the Total War series for eight years now, with the titles of; Shogun, Mongol Invasion, Medieval, Viking Invasion, Rome, Barbarian Invasion, Medieval II, and Medieval II Kingdoms. There have also been countless modifications (mods) of theses games by avid fans over the years, trying to bring even greater dimensions of accuracy and realism to their playing experience.

Now what I am talking about here is not a First Person Shooter which “improves your spatial reasoning ability” (Mikes Blog ;) ), but Real-Time Strategy games, with a player-ship with an ever increasing demand for real history, and realistic battlefield simulations.

Not that I think that many here (even from the table-top commanders) will be all that interested in starting off on a new adventure in computer gamming. I just wanted to pave the way with this thread for Total War gamers looking for the in-depth information on warfare of the 1700 to 1820 era, which is being brought into the spotlight by the release of the Empire: Total War game.

Strategy and tactics for both land and sea is what they will be looking for. Right off I spotted the British and French Infantry Tactics 1792-1815 as being of possible great interest. I am hoping that some of you here would be so kind as to recommend other titles that you think might benefit RTS application oriented, period warfare history students.

Thanks in advance!

And if you are a Total War player, please chime-in to let everyone know that you are indeed looking for answers here, and appreciate the invaluable resources provided.

“When Galaxies Collide” was intended as a sort of subtitle, I see that there is no way to repair that now. Nor pasted paragraphing, which would increase readability of my post.

My apologies, I will know better in the future.

I've been playing Total War since Rome and am a huge fan of the series i am also a collecter of Osprey titles and think the two compliment each other greatly i can't recommend these games highly enough. With the realise of Empire and the introduction of Naval battles where the player can fully customize the fleet layout prior to battle is there any titles on Naval tactics from the era.

Hi Grouchy! Thanks for your response. Researching so far, my first choice for naval warfare of the period will be The Royal Navy 1793–1815. If I can I would also like to get Tudor Warships (1)Henry VIII’s Navy and Tudor Warships (2)Elizabeth I’s Navy for a more solid background. Of course I would love to get all of the great books, but there are just too many. Again we would welcome any recommendations for books that pay special attention to strategies and tactics for land and/or sea forces of any and all nations during the 1700 to 1820’s.

I'm one of the designers on the Total War series and, for a good portion of the process, my desk is generally piled high with Osprey titles. As well as reading material, I find they make splendid cover. :)
