Battle of Hong Kong 1941

blaawan

The battle of Hong Kong (8th Dec 1941 to 25th Dec 1941) is a short but intense battle, fought by the Canadian, Indian, British as well as Hong Kong's Volunteers against the Japanese. I live in Hong Kong and many of the battle sites are in town and can be reached - any interest for Osprey to cover this subject, may be under the Campaign series?

Great idea! Even better would be a campaign book on the fighting for Singapore.

This is an interesting idea – I can pass the suggestion on to my colleagues but I should warn you that the Campaign series editors are given a huge number of exciting proposals and ideas to consider so the series has a lot of projects lined up already!

I hope that I'm being too cynical here but I think that one reason that we may never see a 'Campaign' book about the Battle of Hong Kong is because it was an Axis victory and a Japanese victory at that. Of the 60 books in the 'Campaign' series that deal with World War II, I counted only 12 which were about campaigns or battles won by the Axis. Only one of these - Pearl Harbour - is about a Japanese victory (or one and half, if you count the book about Guam). Granted, the Allies really did win more victories than the Axis, though not at a ratio of five to one. Why the imbalance? I think that it's because most people reading such books are English speakers who identify with the Allies, particularly the Anglo-American side. I know that I generally do. Who wants to read about the good guys getting kicked around? I hope that I'm wrong about this. I would very much like to see 'Campaign' books about the Battle of Hong Kong, the fall of Malaya and Singapore, the Battle of the Java Sea, or the German invasion of Yugoslavia and mainland Greece. Still, I won't be holding my breath.

Erm hang on! What about the WWII campaign titles covering Arnhem 1944, France 1940, Gazala 1942, Crete 1941, 3x Operation Barbaossa 1941, Sevastopol 1942 and Poland 1939???? Arn't they all Axis victories??? As to the Far East Axis victories I think there is more chance of seeing Malaya & Singapore 1942 as a campaign title.
