The invasion hapend to pervent the Japainese from putting bases there for thier sub fleet and to portect Britsh supply lines.

This was one of the most important ops of the war against Japan.

There were plans afoot to land on Ceylon, the IJN having already driven the British fleet back to East Africa, and then take Madagascar with an eye to using it as a forward base to invade India in an area where famine was rampant and agitation for the British to leave was intense.

Only Ironclad, with impetus added by the Doolittle raid on Tokyo, stopped it.
