The warlike activities of the Vikings were newsworthy, from early raids on monasteries that were considered untouchable, to the conquest of major kingdoms in England in the 9th century and settlement by force in many parts of Britain, Ireland and Continental Europe, and eventually the creation of a short-lived North Sea empire (1028–35) under Cnut the Great.
The series takes its biggest liberties in creating a years-long friendship between Earl Harold and Duke William in order to increase the stakes at the end. In reality, as far as we know, they only met twice, once in Normandy about a year before the battle and again – briefly – at Hastings itself.
Most Viking enthusiasts and re-enactors are familiar with the Varangian Guard, the Vikings who served as personal bodyguards for Byzantine emperors. What many don’t know is that the Varangians were also some of the empire’s most elite combat troops.
