He explores the technical innovations of the fleet, its organization, shipbuilding, manning, and command, and the combat that US Navy ships saw around half the world, from the English Channel to the Pacific Ocean. He also assesses the difficulties the fleet faced and how well the Navy's strategy achieved the United States' war aims, and whether alternative strategies could have performed better.
