Among the new optional spellcasting rules is the option to include casting roll criticals in your game. Critical successes add powerful effects to your spells but to wield such power is not without risk. A critical failure will have lasting consequences for your wizard as the magical forces refuse to bend to their will. 

Let’s look at how one of the trusty spells from the Frostgrave: Second Edition rulebook is modified by the casting roll criticals. Plundering the treasures of Felstad is much easier when you have a snow leopard looking out for you. Roll a critical success and you could even summon a white gorilla. But beware, should you lose control of the summoning, the animal companion may arrive late and serving your enemies! 

Casting roll criticals aren’t the only way to modify your arsenal of spells. Flourishes can be learned whenever a wizard finds or purchases a grimoire for a spell they already know. The spell may then be cast with the flourish applying the listed modifier to the casting role. The aid of an ice wolf is one thing, but with a flourish you could summon an ice wolf with wings!
