Several years ago, an elderly lady told me an extraordinary story, of how she grew up in a part of Germany that no longer exists, how she worked as a nurse during the war, and how she fled her homeland under fire from the Red Army.  Intrigued by her story, I started to research the end of the war in East Prussia and found that there was almost nothing available in English that gave a detailed account of the fighting.  The more I read about the apocalyptic battles in East and West Prussia, and about the greatest seaborne evacuation in history, the more I wanted to write about it.  This book is the end result, and after living and breathing this project for so many years, it is a great feeling to see it in print.  I hope you find it as satisfying to read as I did to write.
