Longbowman vs Billman: Wars of the Roses 1455–87
The long period of civil war in England known as the Wars of the Roses saw Yorkist and Lancastrian commanders field units of longbowmen and billmen, both troops types shaped by prolonged campaigning during the Hundred Years’ War. Their roles in the momentous battles of St Albans (1455), Towton (1461) and Bosworth Field (1485) are assessed in this fully illustrated study.
Swedish soldier vs Russian Soldier: Great Northern War 1700–21
The drawn-out struggle between Sweden and a host of its foes, notably Russia, dominated Northern European affairs for more than two decades. The troops fighting for Sweden and Russia in this sprawling conflict are assessed in this study, with particular emphasis on their roles in the bloody battle of Narva (1700), the abortive Swedish campaign in Ingria (1708) and the fateful clash at Poltava (1709).
British Soldier vs French Soldier: War of the Austrian Succession 1740–48
The War of the Austrian Succession saw much of Europe going to war, with British and French forcers clashing not just in Europe but also in North America, India and elsewhere. In this book, the British and French forces engaged at the bloody battles of Dettingen (27 June 1743), Fontenoy (11 May 1745) and Rocoux (11 October 1746) are investigated in detail.
French Soldier vs Prussian Soldier: Franco-Prussian War 1870–71
In July 1870, France declared war on Prussia and sent troops into Germany, triggering a German invasion of France that August that would culminate in military defeat and revolution in Paris. In this book, the French and Prussian forces engaged at the battles of Spicheren (5 August), Mars-la-Tour (16 August) and Sedan (1–2 September) are examined and assessed.
Polish Resistance Fighter vs German Soldier: Warsaw Uprising 1944
On 1 August 1944, the Polish Home Army mounted an uprising against the German forces occupying the Polish capital. Two months of brutal street fighting ensued as the Soviet forces paused their advance and withheld air support for the Polish fighters. This study examines the two sides’ forces and assesses how they fared in the close-quarter urban battles that raged in Warsaw in the summer of 1944.
