The Japan Self-Defence Forces since 1954

Working closely with allies, notably the United States, the Japan Self-Defence Forces are tasked with disaster response and peacekeeping as well as their primary function. The deployment of JSDF troops to Iraq in 2004–06 proved a turning point, as did the construction of a permanent naval base in Djibouti in 2010. This study focuses on the JSDF’s evolving uniforms, weapons and personal gear.

Iran at War since 1988

Following the end of the Iran–Iraq War in 1988, Iranian forces have been involved in a variety of conflicts, both within the country and beyond its borders. As well as the Army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the regime can draw upon the Police Command and the Basij, a paramilitary reserve force. All of these military elements are described and illustrated in this book.

The United States Marine Corps since 1991

The US Marine Corps has been involved in a series of major combat deployments since the end of the Cold War, from the Gulf War to Afghanistan, Iraq, and worldwide operations to counter Islamic extremism and piracy. Faced with shifting threats, notably the rise of China as a global power, the Corps has evolved to meet new challenges, a process described and illustrated in this study.

The United States Air Force since 1991

Since the end of the Cold War in 1991, the US Air Force has evolved into a smaller, more agile form, capable of mounting precision strikes across the globe. Major structural and technological change has transformed the Air Force, which has been involved in a wide range of operations in a variety of locations. The men and women serving in it are the focus of this fully illustrated volume.

The United States Navy at War since 1945

In the decades since 1991, the US Navy has transitioned from its Cold War focus to new global priorities, notably coastal operations and regional conflicts. Every major US military involvement in this period has involved the US Navy, as cutting-edge technologies and capabilities become available and new threats and challenges arise, notably the ascendancy of China as a major world power.
