Big Reveal 2025: Duel (Military)

The two Duel titles covering naval operations and the three focusing on armour make up a strong list for 2025. My personal favourite is Peter Samsonov’s study of Germany’s Hetzer tank destroyer and the Soviet SU-76M self-propelled gun. Both types were widely employed in the climactic battles on the Eastern Front, notably during the last Axis counter-offensive in Hungary in the spring of 1945

Big Reveal 2025: Dogfight

The solitary Dogfight title for 2025 is Spitfire I – Phoney War and Battle of France. The most famous British fighter of them all, the Spitfire was blooded in the early skirmishes against lone German bombers probing Britain’s coastal defences during the eight-month-long Phoney War. Units used well-rehearsed battle formations to make short work of any aircraft encountered, but crucially they had not encountered any short-range German Bf 109 or Bf 110 fighters.

Big Reveal 2025: Combat

All four of the Combat titles scheduled for 2025 publication are strong subjects that I’ve planned to cover for some time, but I think the one that intrigues me most is Robbie MacNiven’s take on the crucial battles between Hessian and Continental troops in the closing months of 1776, scheduled for November publication.

Big Reveal 2025: Duel (Aviation)

Aviation enthusiasts of the highly popular Duel series are in for a treat in 2025 as there are five titles to look forward to during the course of the year. There are of course some cracking aircraft-versus-aircraft volumes in the list, with B-26 Marauders duelling with Me 262s over Germany in the final months of World War 2 in Europe, Superfortresses being engaged by Japanese nightfighters over the Home Islands in 1944–45, and P-51 Mustangs defending the mighty Boeing bombers from enemy fighters during very long range missions.

Big Reveal 2025: Fleet

Fleet’s second full year of publication includes six new titles, primarily looking at World War II sea power, but also concluding Angus Konstam’s two-part examination of the major battle fleets of World War I, and including Corbin Williamson’s look at US naval power in Korea. I’m particularly pleased to see Larry Paterson’s two new Kriegsmarine books on the list, and his North Sea Command will bring deserved attention to a relatively little-studied area of the naval war.

Big Reveal 2025: Air Campaign

In next year’s Air Campaign list, the World War II European theatre is well represented with new books on the 1944 Transportation Plan, the 1940 battle for France, and Operation Steinbock, while Pacific War titles include studies of Seventh Air Force’s island-hopping campaign and the first of two books on the New Guinea air war.
